Australia has high standards in ultrasound and a long and prosperous ultrasound heritage, with some of the first imaging units having been developed by Australian scientists. Because ultrasound is an affordable and accessible non-invasive diagnostic tool it has been enthusiastically adopted by Australia's medical community. Due to this demand for diagnostic ultrasound services, Australia suffers from a shortage of qualified medical sonographers. Prior to working in Australia, radiographers and sonographers must obtain accreditation from the Australian Institute of Radiography. This form of official recognition is required by registration and licensing boards in Australian states, and is also a prerequisite for most visas. State registration of radiographers is also a requirement in most states.
Before working in Australia, overseas trained sonographers must obtain accreditation with the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry.
A Certificate of Recognition in Ultrasound is needed for eligibility unless your ultrasound qualifications were obtained in Australia or New Zealand.
